Meet Dr. Kim Leverett

About Dr. Leverett

She is a wife to her husband Mark, mother of Kennedy and Reagan, a pharmacist, and a personal trainer with a passion for health, wellness and helping others live their healthiest life.

Dr. Leverett was born and raised in Arkansas. Her upbringing had a huge impact on the woman she is today. Being raised in a single-parent household by a strong mother with impeccable work ethic lead to her never ending persistence, tenacity, and drive for education. She made the decision to pursue a career in pharmacy and graduated in 1992 from Xavier University of Louisiana College of Pharmacy. After graduation, she practiced community pharmacy for 25 years. Her time in pharmacy, further fed her desire to help patients take control of their lives through living a healthier lifestyle. She understood the importance of this having always lived an active lifestyle, using whatever “gym” was available to her including running the gravel roads and highways of small-town Arkansas.

In retail community pharmacy, she saw patients come into the pharmacy to pick up medications for preventable diseases. She knew that with targeted lifestyle changes, her patients could live healthier lives and, in some cases, could get off some of the medications they were taking. She made the decision to move from pharmacy to personal training to do just that  remove the band-aid that medications sometimes place on conditions and assist people on their personal journey to wellness.

Her path to full-time personal training was not a straight one and was not without detours and delays. For almost 10 years, she trained when she could in local gyms and offered cardio kickboxing classes at her church. The ability to do this allowed her to reconnect with her passion for physical fitness. From 2005 – 2009, she juggled being a wife, a busy mom of two girls, and caring for her elderly mother as she went through her battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Caring for the most important people in Kim’s life meant she had to put her personal dreams on hold.  In 2009, she realized her dream and opened A Kick Above Personal Training Studio. She did so, still as a busy mom and caretaker but, in the end, would show how physical fitness, health, and wellness are so vital in overcoming obstacles.

The Fight with Cancer

Overcoming Cancer

About Dr. Leverett - Overcoming Cancer

In 2013, after a routine mammogram, Kim was diagnosed with breast cancer. She immediately began treatment which included six rounds of chemotherapy and 35 rounds of radiation treatment. Throughout her breast cancer treatment, she continued to work out daily and train clients, some of whom had no idea about her diagnosis.

Although incredibly hard, she attributes her faith in Christ, fitness level, her ability to remain active, and her clients’ support with keeping her going. This is evidenced by an excerpt from her personal letters during her treatment.

There have been three times that I have cried since July 2013. The first was when I arrived home after my doctor’s visit and learned of the unwanted diagnosis of breast cancer. The second was when I had to have outpatient surgery to have the port put in (I think it was just the idea of having some object placed in my body and the effects of the anesthesiology drugs). The third, well, it was a day or so after treatment #5. I think the accumulation of chemotherapy meds over a period of time started to truly affect me. The side effects seemed unbearable!!!

On Thursday, while training my 5 AM clients, I heard myself chuckle and laugh. I was joking to get my clients to do the work I had prepared for them. I was starting to feel like myself again.  Then it dawned on me, that this stuff was trying to steal my joy!!  On Friday, I worked out with my 5 AM crew for the first time in a week.

So, I will keep my proclamation!! I cried…but I didn’t bow! I spent a lot of time in the fetal position…but I didn’t bow!

In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, [even] into his ears. Psalm 18:6.

Dr. Leverett has now been cancer-free since 2014 and continues to teach others the importance of overall health and wellness as a way to best equip your body for living. This inside look into the faith and strength of Dr. Leverett is a glimpse into the heart and soul she places in her personal training philosophy.

A Kick Above

Personal Training studio

In 2019, because of client growth, Dr. Leverett opened a new, expanded facility.  The additional space and state of the art equipment allowed her to increase her capacity to serve more people within her community.

Her training philosophy is simple – to help clients be the best version of themselves.  It is with this in mind, that she helps people reach their goals and live healthy lives in every aspect: mind, body and soul.  In her words, “It’s A Lifestyle!”
